Asist. Surubaru Codrin Bogdan
Dumnezeu s-o odihneasca in pace! Faminlia Prof. T. CHIFU

In amintire...

Dumnezeu s-o odihneasca in pace! Familia Prof. MIHAI MITITIUC

Profesor Constantin TOMA

CV

Prof. Carmela Cortini Pedrotti (1931-2007) Professor Carmela Cortini Pedrotti is born in Caltanissetta (Sicily) on October 18, 1931, she graduated from the University of Florence in Natural Sciences in 1954, Biological Sciences in 1955, and Forest Sciences in 1966. She was proud of having been the first woman in Italy to earn a degree in Forestry. From 1955 to 1964 she served as assistant and adjunct professor of Pharmaceutical Botany at the Botanical Institute of the University of Florence, focussing originally on research on cytology and plant embryology. In March 1959, with the sponsorship of Professor Alberto Chiarugi, she was named conservation director at the Italian Central Cryptogamic Herbarium of Florence; from this time on she intensified her activity in the field of bryology, examining flora and systematics as well as ecology and biogeography. In 1962 she moved to the University of Camerino, where she became Professor of Systematic Botany and Director of the Botany Institute, later the Department of Botany and Ecology, providing notable drive for the departmental library and the botanic gardens. Earlier in her scientific career her activity also focused on research in phanerogamic vegetation, including cartography, and later exclusively on Bryology. In this sector she established international collaborations with, among others, R. Schumacker (Liège), A. Lecointe (Caen), C. Sérgio (Lisbon), C. Casas (Barcellona), R. Düll (Duisburg), R. Ochyra (Warsaw), F. Lara (Madrid). In Camerino, and from Camerino, Professor Cortini succeeded in restoring the discipline of Bryology to the level of importance it had held as a great tradition in the second half of the 1800s to the first decades of the 1900s. She formed many students who now conduct their research in a variety of universities, through individual sojourns at Camerino’s Department of Botany and Ecology, and through specialization courses and field trips. In 1980 she was invited to represent Italy in the Work Group for Cartography of the European Bryological Flora, coordinated by Professor René Schumacker, headquartered at the Station Scientifique des Hautes Fagnes of the University of Liège. In 1992 she organized and for many years coordinated the Italian Botanical Society Work Group on Bryology, with the goal of creating a stable group of bryologists engaged as individuals and collectively in promoting research on species, vegetation, and ecology. Most of her species and chorological research in Bryology was in the Alps, Central Italy, and the islands, with several monographic works dedicated to Sardinia. Her Prodromo dei Muschi della Sardegna, published in 1980, listed 315 moss species on the island. These species studies are of indubitable interest, as they report new sites for already known species and especially because they report new species for Italy, such as Anthoceros mandonii on the island of Montecristo, Diplophylum obtusatum for the Apuan Alps (new also for Europe), Scopelophila ligulata for Trentino-Alto Adige and the Colline Metallifere (Tuscany), and Paludella squarrosa for some peatbogs of Lombardy and Trentino. In 1986 and 1996 she published the Bibliografia Briologica d’Italia, a work encompassing over two centuries of bryological publication in Italy by scholars in this sector. This bibliographical work formed the foundation for the compilation of the Check-list of the mosses that grow in Italy and the assessment of the current state of knowledge about the Italian bryoflora. The Check-list of the Mosses of Italy (1992, 2001) is a critical work that comprises the systematic list of the families and genera of the mosses of the Italian flora, with their distribution in the individual regions of Italy. This is the first complete work reporting the real entity and distribution of the species of mosses present in Italy. In 1991 Professor Cortini published the Critical List of the Bryophytes of the Apuan Alps (Tuscany), compiled through review of about 4,000 herbarium samples and personal collections. The list comprised 140 species of liverworts and 344 species of mosses and in addition discussed the origin of notable species, with particular reference to the oceanic-macaronesian element such as Dumortiera hirsuta, Marchesinia machaii, Plagiochila killarniensis, Lejeunea lamacerina, etc. On the basis of paleo-climatic and paleo-ecological issues, it hypothesized that the species of this chorological element returned during the post-glacial age, excluding the possibility of survival during the last glaciation. In 1992 she published the Red-List of the Bryophytes of Italy, a work containing the list of the Bryophytes that are becoming extinct in Italy, classified according to the IUCN categories. Reported for each species are regional distribution, bibliographic distribution, general and ecological geographic distribution and status. The book examined 129 liverwort and 367 moss species. In over 40 years of bryological research, Professor Cortini dedicated a great number of studies to defining the role of bryophytes as structural and functional component of forest ecosystems, both in terms of the capacity for autoregulation and for forest autoregeneration. An important part of her academic career was dedicated to the realization of the Flora of the Mosses of Italy, a two-volume monographic work containing the analytical keys for determining genera and species, diagnoses of all the species of the Italian flora (818), with notes on ecology and distribution and tables with drawings of the morphological, anatomical, and cytological characteristics of the various species. The first volume was published in 2001, the second in 2005. The Flora of the Mosses of Italy represented the first work of its kind in Italy and was among very few such works produced on the international scientific scene. For those who objected that this work was written in Italian rather than in English, and thus lacked relevant “weight” in scientific production, she would respond, “I don’t work for ‘impact factor’.” The expression, which today may appear anachronistic, perhaps represented her character as a researcher of another time, but also embodied her personality, reserved, modest, but also concrete, decisive, and occasionally, also adamant. Professor Carmela Cortini Pedrotti died on April 29, 2007, at the age of 75, after a long and progressively debilitating illness during which, up to only a few days from the end, she was fully lucid. I believe that she found it very humiliating to be unable, during its illness, to work in the laboratory where she spent up to ten hours a day, including Saturdays and Sundays, intent over her microscope, studying the mosses to which she dedicated such a great part of her scientific activity. Professor Cortini is to be remembered as a master/teacher able to transmit, without hesitation or jealousies, a rigorous scientific method of inquiry into reality, into nature, according to the totality of its factors, profoundly conscious, to use Pascal’s ideas, that “man is placed between two infinites, the infinitely great and the infinitely small – precisely like the world of her mosses – a Nothing in comparison with the Infinite, an All in comparison with the Nothing … the end of things and their beginning … hopelessly hidden from him in an impenetrable secret.” (Blaise Pascal, Thoughts, Section 2, 72, 17).
